Overview of 1986 Topps Baseball Cards
The 1986 Topps baseball card set is a significant entry in the hobby, representing a transitional period in card collecting known as the “Junk Wax Era.” The set is large, with a base set of 792 cards, and also includes a separate, highly sought-after 132-card “Topps Traded” set.
Set Design and Features: The design of the 1986 Topps cards is distinctive, with a half-black, half-white border framing a color player photo. The team name is printed in large lettering at the top of the card, while the player’s name is in smaller lettering at the bottom. A small circle in the corner indicates the player’s position. While some collectors find the design lacking compared to other sets from the era, its nostalgic value and connection to the time period are undeniable.
The base set includes several subsets: Record Breakers (#s 201-207): Highlights players who achieved significant milestones. Turn Back the Clock (#s 401-405): Features cards with a vintage design. All-Stars (#s 701-722): Showcases the top players from the All-Star game. Team Leaders: Cards featuring a team’s top players, with checklists on the back.
Key Cards and Rookies: While the base set is full of iconic players, its rookie card selection is not as strong as other sets from the era. However, it does feature some notable rookie cards (RCs), including:
- Len Dykstra (#53)
- Cecil Fielder (#386)
- Vince Coleman (#370)
The Topps Traded Set: The 1986 Topps Traded set, a supplemental issue of 132 cards, is widely considered the more valuable and important of the two sets. It is a star-studded list of rookie cards and player variations, including:
- Barry Bonds (#11T)
- Bobby Bonilla (#12T)
- Jose Canseco (#20T)
- Will Clark (#24T)
- Bo Jackson (#50T)
- Wally Joyner (#51T)
- John Kruk (#56T)
- Kevin Mitchell (#66T)
