Mickey Tettleton was one of the most unique and productive catchers of the late 80s and early 90s. He wasn’t your typical “defense-first” backstop; he was a pioneer of the “Three True Outcomes” (home runs, walks, and strikeouts) long before it became a common MLB strategy.
Known for his unconventional batting stance and his love of Fruit Loops, here is why Tettleton remains a cult favorite. Tettleton had one of the most recognizable stances in baseball history. He stood deep in the box, holding the bat almost completely horizontal and tilted toward the pitcher, appearing incredibly relaxed before exploding through the zone.
While playing for the Orioles, Tettleton credited his offensive surge to eating Fruit Loops. This led to fans bringing boxes of the cereal to the stadium and cemented his status as a fan favorite in Baltimore.
Tettleton was a two-time All-Star and a three-time Silver Slugger winner. He played for the Athletics, Orioles, Tigers, and Rangers over a 14-season career.
