Sierra was a superstar for the Texas Rangers before he was even old enough to rent a car. He was a switch-hitting dynamo with power, speed, and a cannon for an arm.
Sierra had a monster 1989, leading the league in RBIs (119), triples (14), and slugging percentage (.543). He finished a agonizingly close second in the MVP voting to Robin Yount—a result that many Rangers fans still dispute today.
In 1992, he was the centerpiece of one of the biggest trades in history, going to the Oakland A’s in exchange for Jose Canseco.
After leaving Texas, Sierra’s career hit a turbulent stretch. He bulked up to hit more home runs, which cost him his speed and agility. He clashed with legendary managers like Tony La Russa and Joe Torre. By the late 90s, the former superstar was bouncing around the league and eventually found himself playing in independent leagues and the Mexican League.
Most players with Sierra’s resume would have retired, but Ruben reinvented himself. He humbled himself, changed his attitude, and became a feared veteran pinch-hitter and DH.
- Comeback Player of the Year: In 2001, he returned to the Rangers and won the AL Comeback Player of the Year award.
- Yankees Postseason Hero: He became a fan favorite in the Bronx during his second stint with the Yankees (2003–2005). He hit a legendary, game-tying three-run homer in the 8th inning of the 2004 ALDS against the Twins.
