Robin René Yount, also going by the nicknames “The Kid” and “Rockin’ Robin,” is a legendary figure in baseball, renowned for his entire 20-year Major League Baseball career (1974-1993) being spent with one team: the Milwaukee Brewers.

Yount made his major league debut as an 18-year-old shortstop in 1974, becoming an everyday starter immediately. He was the third overall pick in the 1973 MLB draft. Yount was a two time AL MVP at two positions. This is perhaps Yount’s most unique and impressive achievement. He is one of only a few players in MLB history to win an MVP award at two different positions. In 1982, Yount had a phenomenal season, leading the Brewers to their only World Series appearance. This performance earned him his first AL MVP award. He also won a Gold Glove Award at shortstop that year. After battling shoulder and arm issues that prompted a move from shortstop, Yount successfully transitioned to center field in the mid-1980s. In 1989, at age 33, he proved his exceptional adaptability by winning his second AL MVP award as a center fielder.

Yount joined baseball’s elite 3,000-hit club on September 9, 1992, becoming the 17th player to achieve the milestone. He holds virtually every significant offensive record for the Brewers franchise, including career games played, hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs (at the time of retirement), and RBIs. Yount was a three-time All-Star (1980, 1982, 1983) and a three-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1980, 1982, 1989). Yount was a key member of the powerful 1982 Brewers team, known as “Harvey’s Wallbangers” (after manager Harvey Kuenn), which reached the World Series.

After retiring as a player in 1993, Robin Yount has remained a cherished figure in Milwaukee and within the baseball community. He has held various coaching roles, including serving on the Brewers’ coaching staff.

Robin Yount was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on his first ballot, receiving 77.5% of the votes. His unique combination of durability, exceptional hitting, and the ability to excel at two premium defensive positions made him an undeniable Hall of Famer. The Milwaukee Brewers retired his uniform No. 19 in 1994, a year after his retirement. A statue of him stands outside American Family Field, the Brewers’ home ballpark.
