Jim Sundberg stands as one of the premier defensive catchers of the late 1970s and 1980s. Selected 2nd overall in the 1973 secondary phase draft by the Texas Rangers out of the University of Iowa, “Sunny” went straight from Class A ball to the Majors in 1974, earning an All-Star nod in his very first season.
Over a durable 16-year career—spent primarily anchor-man style for the Rangers before later winning a ring with the 1985 Kansas City Royals—Sundberg paired an elite defensive arm with exceptional game-calling.
He was a 6-time consecutive Gold Glove winner in the American League (1976–1981), becoming the first AL catcher to win six of the awards. In 1975, Sundberg set a modern American League record by catching 155 games in a single season, recording 101 assists along the way. He is one of the few post-WWII catchers to eclipse 100 assists in a season.
Traded to the Royals before the 1985 season, he played a crucial role in their championship run, catching all 14 postseason games and driving in 6 runs in the ALCS. He retired with 1,962 games caught, which ranked behind only Bob Boone at the time of his retirement in 1989. He caught 130 career shutouts, placing him 5th all-time among MLB catchers.
