Dave Pagan was a right-handed pitcher from Saskatchewan, Canada, who played five seasons in the Major Leagues during the mid-1970s. While he spent time as both a starter and a long reliever, he is perhaps best remembered for his involvement in one of the biggest blockbuster deadline trades of the decade.

Pagan originally signed with the Oakland Athletics organization as an undrafted free agent in 1970 before landing with the New York Yankees, where he made his MLB debut on July 1, 1973. He pitched as a swingman for the Yankees through early 1976, alternating between the big-league bullpen and Triple-A Syracuse. On June 15, 1976, Pagan became a notable footnote in a massive 10-player deadline trade between rivals. The Yankees sent Pagan, Rick Dempsey, Tippy Martinez, Scott McGregor, and Rudy May to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Ken Holtzman, Doyle Alexander, Elrod Hendricks, Grant Jackson, and Jimmy Freeman.

  • Seattle Mariners (1977): Selected by Seattle in the 1976 Expansion Draft, he pitched 66 innings for the inaugural Mariners team, recording 24 appearances and 2 saves.
  • Pittsburgh Pirates (1977): Traded to Pittsburgh late in the 1977 season, making his final major league appearance on September 27 against the Mets.

Pagan’s official solo rookie card features him in a classic New York Yankees uniform, framed by the bright, iconic multi-colored borders of the ’75 Topps set.
