Gary Edmund Carter, also known as “The Kid” for his youthful exuberance and boundless energy, was a Hall of Fame catcher whose 19-year Major League Baseball career (1974-1992) spanned two iconic franchises: the Montreal Expos and the New York Mets.
Carter debuted with the Expos in 1974. In his official rookie season in 1975, he split time between catcher and right field. He immediately made an impact, batting .270 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs, earning him the Sporting News Rookie of the Year award and a second-place finish for the National League Rookie of the Year. He even made the All-Star team as a right fielder. By 1977, Carter became the Expos’ full-time catcher, a position he would define for the next decade.
During his Expos tenure, Carter was an eight-time All-Star (1975, 1979-1984), a three-time Gold Glove Award winner (1980-1982), a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1981, 1982, 1984-1986) and The All-Star Game MVP twice (1981, 1984).
In 1986, Carter’s leadership and clutch hitting were instrumental in leading the Mets to a World Series championship over the Boston Red Sox. He remained an All-Star with the Mets, extending his streak to 10 consecutive selections (1979-1988).
After five successful seasons with the Mets, Carter spent a season each with the San Francisco Giants (1990) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1991). He fittingly concluded his career by returning to the Montreal Expos for his final season in 1992.
Gary Carter was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 on his sixth ballot, receiving 78.0% of the votes. He became the first Hall of Famer whose plaque depicts him as a member of the Montreal Expos, a decision by the Hall of Fame that honored his long and impactful tenure with the franchise. He was also inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. After his playing career, Carter continued to be involved in baseball, serving as a broadcaster for the Florida Marlins, and later managing in the minor leagues.
Gary Carter’s most recognized rookie card is this 1975 Topps #620. This card is part of the incredibly popular 1975 Topps set, which is known for its vibrant, two-tone colored borders.
