Kittle burst onto the scene in 1983 as the face of the “Winning Ugly” White Sox. He was a 25-year-old rookie who seemed to come out of nowhere to lead Chicago to their first postseason appearance in 24 years.

AL Rookie of the Year: He slugged 35 home runs and drove in 100 RBIs, easily taking home the award.

All-Star Status: He was selected as an All-Star in his very first full season.

The Strikeout King: Along with the power came a league-leading 150 strikeouts. Kittle was the prototype for the modern “Three True Outcomes” hitter—it was usually a walk, a strikeout, or a ball hit to another zip code.

Kittle’s legend is tied to the architecture of Old Comiskey Park. He was famous for hitting “roof shots”—mammoth home runs that would actually land on or clear the stadium’s outfield roof. He hit seven roof shots in his career, more than any other player in the history of that ballpark. His power was so respected that he became the last player to ever hit a ball onto the roof before the stadium was demolished in 1990.

Before he was a star, Kittle was a literal ironworker in Gary, Indiana. His path to the majors was nearly ended by a broken neck sustained in the minor leagues in 1978. Doctors told him he might never walk properly, let alone play baseball. He spent years working in steel mills while rehabilitating, eventually making a miraculous comeback that defined his gritty reputation.

Today, Kittle is well-known for his incredible custom furniture and benches made entirely out of baseball bats, balls, and bases. He remains a beloved ambassador for the White Sox, often seen at the park greeting fans with the same down-to-earth personality he had in the ’80s.
