Jay Bell was a rare breed of player who successfully transitioned from a defensive specialist to a legitimate power threat later in his career.
Bell’s most iconic moment didn’t come from a home run, but from a slide. In the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, Bell reached base on a fielder’s choice. Moments later, when Luis Gonzalez hit his famous “bloop” single off Mariano Rivera, Bell was the man who crossed home plate to score the World Series-winning run, ending the Yankees’ dynasty.
The Pittsburgh Foundation (1989–1996): He was the glue of the Pirates’ “Killer B’s” era alongside Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla, leading the NL in sacrifice hits multiple times.
The Arizona Renaissance (1998–2002): Moving to second base for the expansion Diamondbacks, he found a power stroke in his 30s, becoming one of the league’s top offensive second basemen.
After retiring as a player Bell served as a bench coach for the Diamondbacks and Reds, and hitting coach for the Pirates. He most recently managed the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels AA affiliate) through 2021.
