Did You Know? Possessing an astonishing, cat-like range, lightning-fast hands, and an absolute laser for a throwing arm, Alomar turned the right side of the infield into a total dead zone for base hits. He routinely made diving stops deep in the hole, throwing out runners from his knees, and popularized the acrobatic, mid-air jump-throw to first base that became a nightly fixture on highlight reels. His defensive excellence earned him 10 Gold Glove Awards—the most by any second baseman in American League history—cementing his status alongside the legendary Bill Mazeroski as one of the greatest defensive second basemen to ever play the game.
