Manwaring’s peak came in the early ’90s when he was the primary battery mate for Hall of Famers like Greg Maddux (during Maddux’s brief time in the NL) and specifically Giants legends.
- 1993 Gold Glove Award: This was his banner year. He led National League catchers with a .998 fielding percentage and threw out 45% of base stealers, the second-highest mark in the league that year.
- Willie Mac Award (1993): He was honored by his teammates and coaches for his spirit and leadership, an award given annually to the “most inspirational” Giant.
- 1989 World Series: He was a member of the Giants team that faced the Oakland Athletics in the famous “Earthquake Series.”
Manwaring’s value was often found in the “unseen” parts of the game. In 1993, he was famously tied for 4th in intentional walks in the National League. This wasn’t because he was a terrifying hitter, but because he usually batted 8th—pitchers would walk him to get to the pitcher’s spot, a testament to his role in the lineup.
