Set Notes: For the first time in 1988 Score released their baseball card set. With a unique colorful design Score hit the market with great success. The fronts of the 1988 Score baseball cards feature a large player photo, color boarder and white player name over a lighter color triangle. The yellow Score logo and (3) stars along the bottom are also on each card. Opposed to other baseball card sets of this year, Score included a backside player photo, stats and a writeup about the player. While today these cards don’t hold a lot of value it marks a time in history where many new companies have entered the market and some are still around today.

Overview of 1988 Score Baseball  Cards

The 1988 Score baseball card set is a significant one in the history of the hobby, marking the first year of production for the Score brand. Distributed by Major League Marketing, the set was known for its vibrant design and full-color player photos on the back of the cards, which was a departure from the more common limited backs of the era.

Design: The set consists of 660 cards, each featuring one of six different border colors on the front. The card backs were a standout feature, with a color player photo in addition to the standard statistics.

Rookie Cards: While many cards from the late 1980s are not particularly valuable due to overproduction, the 1988 Score set does contain some notable rookie cards. Key rookies in the main set include Hall of Famers Tom Glavine (#638) and Matt Williams (#118). There was also a separate 110-card “Rookie and Traded” set that featured rookie cards of future stars like Roberto Alomar (#105T) and Craig Biggio (#103T).

Subsets and Inserts: The set included various subsets, such as “Rookie Prospects” and “Season Highlights.” It also featured “Magic Motion” trivia cards that were included in some packs. There were also glossy and “Tiffany” versions of the set that were produced in smaller quantities and are more highly sought after by collectors.
(Currently this site only displays values for base set cards no errors, Tiffany or other variations.)
