Andrés Galarraga, affectionately known as “The Big Cat”, had a career that was as much about resilience as it was about raw power. Standing 6’3″ and moving with surprising agility for his size, Galarraga was a cornerstone of the 1990s “slugger era.”
Galarraga played 19 seasons in the Major Leagues, primarily for the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies, and Atlanta Braves. He was the first Venezuelan-born player to win a batting title and became a national hero in his home country. After struggling with injuries and a low batting average in the early ’90s, Galarraga signed with the expansion Colorado Rockies. Under the tutelage of Don Baylor, he opened his stance and transformed into an offensive juggernaut.
In his first year in Colorado, he hit a staggering .370, the highest for a right-handed hitter since Joe DiMaggio in 1939. Despite his offensive fame, he was a defensive wizard at first base, winning two Gold Glove Awards (1989, 1990) during his time with Montreal. Galarraga’s career is defined by his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He missed the entire 1999 season while undergoing chemotherapy.
At age 39, he made a triumphant return with the Atlanta Braves, hitting a home run on Opening Day. He finished the season with a .302 average, 28 HRs, and 100 RBIs, earning his second Comeback Player of the Year award and an All-Star selection.
