MLB Career (1988–1996): He was a first-round pick for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987. He spent most of his career as a solid relief pitcher for the Cardinals, Rangers, Marlins, and Brewers.

Did You Know?  Long before he put on St. Louis pinstripes, Carpenter was making massive waves as an exceptional dual-sport weapon for the University of Georgia.

Not only was he an All-American starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, but he also served as the football team’s starting punter from 1985 to 1986. His booming, precise leg strength and raw athletic profile caught the eyes of scouts across the country. Ultimately, his high-90s sinking fastball won out over football. The St. Louis Cardinals were so enamored with his explosive arm and athletic makeup that they selected him in the first round (14th overall) of the 1987 MLB Draft. He rewarded their faith by rocketing through the minor leagues in just over a year.
