While Jose Canseco was a global icon of the “Bash Brothers” era, his identical twin brother, Ozzie Canseco, is a legendary figure in his own right—mostly as one of the ultimate “what if” and “fringe” players in baseball history. The two were so identical that rumors famously swirled for years that they would occasionally swap places during games (though these remain mostly fun urban legends).
Ozzie’s Major League career was brief, spanning just 24 games between 1990 and 1993. In 1990, the Oakland A’s actually had both twins on the roster at the same time.
Interestingly, Ozzie was actually drafted as a pitcher by the Yankees in the 2nd round of the 1983 draft (higher than Jose, who went in the 15th round). He converted to an outfielder later, trying to follow in his brother’s power-hitting footsteps.
While Ozzie didn’t find his power stroke in the Big Leagues, he became a bona fide superstar in independent baseball. In 2000, playing for the Newark Bears, Ozzie hit 48 home runs. Ironically, Ozzie’s 48 home runs in a single season is higher than Jose’s personal single-season best of 46. For one summer, Ozzie was technically the most prolific “Bash Brother” in the family.
Ozzie has transitioned away from the dugout and into a surprising second act. He is a successful real estate agent in the Las Vegas area, working with high-end properties.
