Bichette is best remembered as the heart of the “Blake Street Bombers,” the legendary Colorado Rockies lineup that terrorized pitchers in the high altitude of the early Coors Field era.
Bichette was a four-time All-Star and a classic “free swinger.” He didn’t walk much, but when he connected, the ball traveled a long way.
While he started with the Angels and Brewers, his career exploded when he joined the expansion Rockies in 1993. He hit the first home run in franchise history and later the first-ever home run at Coors Field (a 14th-inning walk-off).
The 1995 season was his masterpiece. In a strike-shortened season, he led the NL in Hits (197), Home Runs (40), and RBI (128), and finished a razor-thin second in MVP voting to Barry Larkin. Despite not being known for speed, he joined the 30-30 club in 1996 (31 HR, 31 SB), proving he was a surprisingly well-rounded athlete in his prime.
Bichette remained close to the game after retiring, though his approach was always more “old school” and feel-based. He returned to Colorado in 2013 as the hitting coach under manager Walt Weiss. He served as a major league coach and special assistant for the Blue Jays (2020–2021), notably helping develop their young core.
