He is widely considered one of the top three defensive shortstops to ever play the game, alongside Ozzie Smith and Derek Jeter (though many purists argue Vizquel’s glove was superior to Jeter’s).
Vizquel’s career was defined by his longevity and his “vacuum” of a glove. He played 24 seasons (1989–2012), a nearly impossible feat for a middle infielder.
His accolades include 11 Gold Gloves, he was famous for his “barehand” play—charging slow rollers and whipping the ball to first in one fluid motion without ever using his glove. In the mid-90s, he and second baseman Roberto Alomar formed arguably the greatest defensive middle infield in MLB history for the Cleveland Indians.
Vizquel’s legacy is complicated. For a long time, he was considered a “lock” for the National Baseball Hall of Fame based on his defensive records and hit total. However, his voting percentages have plummeted in recent years due to significant off-field issues.
Following his playing days, Vizquel spent time coaching and managing in the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers organizations. However, due to the aforementioned legal issues, he has largely stepped away from Major League-affiliated coaching roles. He remains active in international baseball clinics and is still a legendary figure in his home country of Venezuela, where he is considered their greatest defensive export.
