Barfield played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues (1981–1992), spending the majority of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays before being traded to the New York Yankees in 1989. Along with George Bell and Lloyd Moseby, he formed what many consider the best outfield trio of that era.
Barfield is frequently cited as having one of the strongest and most accurate arms in baseball history. He led American League outfielders in assists five times and finished his career with 162 total assists.
In 1986, Barfield enjoyed a career year, leading the Major Leagues with 40 home runs. He was a classic power hitter who also struggled with high strikeout totals, a trade-off that was common for his high-production style. In 1985, he became the first player in Blue Jays history to record 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season.
After retiring from MLB in 1992, Barfield played a season in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants (1993), where he hit 26 home runs. He was recently inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023. His son, Josh Barfield, also played in the Major Leagues for the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians.
