Jorge Antonio Bell Mathey, better known as George Bell, was a prominent right-handed hitting outfielder in Major League Baseball for 12 seasons, from 1981 to 1993. He is particularly remembered for his powerful bat and his time with the Toronto Blue Jays.
He made his MLB debut in 1981 with the Blue Jays and, after spending most of 1982 and part of 1983 in the minor leagues, became a full-time starter in 1984. He was part of a dynamic Blue Jays outfield in the mid-1980s alongside Jesse Barfield and Lloyd Moseby.
Bell’s career highlight came in 1987 when he won the American League MVP award. That season, he posted a .308 batting average with 47 home runs (a Blue Jays record at the time) and led the league with 134 RBIs and 369 total bases. He was American League MVP (1987), a 3-time All-Star (1987, 1990, 1991) and a 3-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1985-1987).
After his impactful years with the Blue Jays (1981, 1983-1990), Bell played one season with the Chicago Cubs (1991) and then two seasons with the Chicago White Sox (1992-1993). Notably, he was traded from the Cubs to the White Sox for Sammy Sosa. His performance declined in his final season, and he retired after the 1993 season.
