Before he was a skipper, Francona was a highly touted prospect out of the University of Arizona, where he won the 1980 Golden Spikes Award (given to the best amateur player in the country).

He was a first-round pick for the Montreal Expos and made his debut in 1981. He was a pure contact hitter who rarely struck out, though he lacked the power typical of a first baseman/outfielder. After a series of knee injuries hampered his mobility, he became a valuable bench player and pinch-hitter for the Cubs, Reds, Indians, and Brewers.

He finished his playing days with a .274 batting average and even made one perfect pitching appearance for the Brewers in 1989, striking out the only batter he faced on three pitches.

Francona’s legacy was cemented in the dugout, where he became known for his “player-first” clubhouse culture and postseason mastery. In 2004, he led the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series title in 86 years, famously coming back from a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees in the ALCS. He won a second title with Boston in 2007 and holds the MLB record for winning his first eight consecutive World Series games. He is also the winningest manager in Cleveland Indians/Guardians history, leading them to the 2016 World Series and winning three AL Manager of the Year awards.

After a brief retirement for health reasons, he returned to the dugout in 2025 as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Francona shares this 1982 Topps “Future Stars” card with Brad Mills and Bryn Smith.
