A left-handed pitcher, Davis played 15 seasons (1980–1997) for six different teams. Originally a starter for the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants, he struggled with consistency until a mid-season trade in 1987 sent him to the San Diego Padres, where he was moved to the bullpen and found his true calling as a closer.
Davis’s 1989 campaign remains a high-water mark for relievers. He became just the fourth closer in National League history to win the Cy Young Award, posting 44 Saves: Leading the National League and setting a then-franchise record for the Padres.
Following his Cy Young win, Davis signed a massive (at the time) $13 million free-agent contract with the Kansas City Royals. However, his success didn’t travel; he struggled with control, lost his closer role to Jeff Montgomery, and finished his tenure in Kansas City with a 5.11 ERA. He spent the rest of his career as a journeyman, including stints with the Braves, Brewers, and returns to the Phillies and Padres.
Mark Davis shares this Topps “Future Stars” card with Bob Dernier and Ozzie Virgil.
