Montgomery didn’t start with the Royals. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, but they traded him to Kansas City in 1988 for Van Snider.
Snider played only 19 games for the Reds. Montgomery stayed in Kansas City for 12 seasons, made three All-Star teams, and became the franchise leader in saves. It remains one of the best trades in Royals history.
1993 was the year Montgomery officially became elite. He led the American League with 45 saves, which at the time tied the AL record. He finished the season with a tiny 2.27 ERA. He won the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award (given to the league’s best closer). He also finished 13th in the MVP voting—a rare feat for a relief pitcher.
Unlike the classic closers who tried to blow 100 mph heaters past hitters, Montgomery relied on precision and a legendary curveball.
Since retiring in 1999, Montgomery hasn’t left Kansas City’s side. He has been a fixture on Bally Sports Kansas City (formerly Fox Sports Kansas City) as a pre-game and post-game analyst for over a decade. Fans love him because he breaks down the game with the same analytical mind he used to navigate the 9th inning.
