Jack “Black Jack” McDowell was a right-handed pitcher who had a 12-season career in Major League Baseball from 1987 to 1999. He was known for being a durable workhorse on the mound, with a competitive and fiery personality.
McDowell played for the Chicago White Sox (1987-1988, 1990-1994), New York Yankees (1995), Cleveland Indians (1996-1997), and Anaheim Angels (1998-1999).
He was the 1993 American League Cy Young Award winner. This was the pinnacle of his career, where he led the league with 22 wins. He was selected to the All-Star team three consecutive years from 1991 to 1993. McDowell led the American League in wins in 1993 and complete games in 1991, 1992, and 1995.
After retiring from baseball, McDowell pursued a career in music, playing guitar in several alternative rock bands. He has also coached baseball at various levels, including managing in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor league system and serving as the head baseball coach for Queens University of Charlotte.
