Set Notes: 1988 Topps baseball offers a simple design, large rookie line up and one of the most over produced sets to date. The fronts of the cards feature a color player photo with color line stroke surrounding. Player name is in a diagonal strip along the bottom side. Team name is in color across the top and an all white boarder holds it all together. Backs are orange with player stats, card number among other information. Like almost all baseball card sets of the time, over printing has left low values to most cards.

Overview of 1988 Topps Baseball Cards

The 1988 Topps baseball card set is a popular set for collectors, particularly those who were involved in the hobby during the “junk wax” era. The base set includes 792 cards, but there were also several notable subsets and variations.

Key Rookies and Star Cards: While many cards from this era are not highly valuable due to overproduction, some rookie cards and cards of key players still hold value, especially in high grades (PSA 10). The most sought-after rookie card from this set is that of Hall of Famer Tom Glavine. Other notable rookie cards include Ken Caminiti, Roberto Alomar, and Mark Grace.

Set Design: The 1988 Topps set is known for its distinct design. The cards feature a team-colored border with the player’s name and team name at the bottom, enclosed in a rounded-corner box. The player’s position is also included on the front of the card. The backs of the cards contain player statistics and a brief biography.

Variations and Subsets: The 1988 Topps set has several interesting variations and subsets that collectors look for.
(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)

  • Al Leiter Error and Corrected cards: Card #18 of Al Leiter has an error version with a picture of Steve George and a corrected version with the correct picture.
  • Team Leader cards: The set includes cards featuring team leaders from the 1987 season.
  • Record Breaker cards: A subset dedicated to players who set new records.
  • All-Star Rookie Team: This subset features players who made the All-Star Rookie team in 1988.

Other 1988 Topps Products: Topps also released a few other products in 1988, including: Topps Traded: A separate set featuring players who were traded during the season, as well as rookies who debuted later in the year. Topps Big was an oversized card set with a 100-card checklist and Toys “R” Us Rookies which was a boxed set of 33 rookie cards.
