Selected in the 15th round of the 1982 MLB Draft out of Delta State University, Barry Lyons was a dependable right-handed hitting catcher and clubhouse leader during the New York Mets’ dominant late-1980s era.
Serving as the primary backup and tandem partner to Hall of Famer Gary Carter, Lyons spent seven seasons in the Major Leagues (1986–1991, 1995) with the Mets, Dodgers, Angels, and White Sox.
Lyons broke into the majors right as the Mets reached their absolute peak, earning a reputation for his game calling and right-handed pop.
1986 World Championship Year: Promoted in late 1986 after earning Triple-A International League All-Star honors with Tidewater, Lyons appeared in six regular-season games for the legendary 1986 Mets, earning a World Series ring.
1988 Career Campaign: Enjoyed his best individual big-league season in 1988, appearing in 47 games for the 100-win NL East Champion Mets. He hit .270 with 9 home runs and 29 RBIs in just 148 at-bats, boasting a strong .493 slugging percentage.
Dwight Gooden’s Personal Catcher: During his tenure in Flushing, Lyons frequently caught star ace Dwight Gooden, building strong battery chemistry that made him an invaluable asset to manager Davey Johnson.
Return of Minor League Baseball to Biloxi: Following his playing and coaching career, Lyons spearheaded the effort to bring Minor League Baseball back to his hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi, helping establish the Biloxi Shuckers franchise in 2015.
