Buhner earned his nickname after taking a ball off his head but still making the play. His coach remarked it was lucky he had a “bony head,” and the name stuck.
Buhner’s most lasting cultural impact in Seattle was “Buhner Buzz Night.” Any fan who agreed to have their head shaved at the stadium received free admission to the right-field seats. At its peak, thousands of fans showed up with bald heads to cheer him on. The promotion was so iconic that the Mariners revived it as recently as 2024 for its 30th anniversary, where Buhner himself gave catcher Cal Raleigh a buzz cut.
Jay Buhner has several accolades including 3 consecutive 40-HR Seasons (1995–1997)—a rare feat in that era. All-Star / Gold Glove 1996 (The peak of his career). 310 Career Home Runs and was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2004.
Jay Buhner remains heavily involved with the Mariners organization. In early 2025, it was announced that Buhner would return to the broadcast booth for Root Sports, calling a rotation of games and appearing on pre- and post-game shows. He is a frequent guest instructor at Spring Training in Peoria, Arizona, often seen hanging out with his old teammate and current Mariners manager, Dan Wilson.
