Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent out of Puerto Rico in 1982, José “Chico” Lind was one of the premier defensive second basemen of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Partnering with shortstop Jay Bell to form one of the slickest, most dependable double-play combinations of his generation, Lind was the everyday infield glue for the Pirates’ three consecutive NL East division-title teams (1990–1992).
While never a big home run threat, Lind’s wizardry with the glove made him a fan favorite in Pittsburgh and a manager’s dream on the turf at Three Rivers Stadium.
1988 Rookie Impression: Stepping into the starting second base job full-time, Lind hit .258 with 135 hits, 18 doubles, and 14 stolen bases, earning a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team.
1992 Gold Glove Season: Snapped Ryne Sandberg’s legendary streak of nine consecutive Gold Gloves by winning the 1992 NL Rawlings Gold Glove Award at second base. He committed just 6 errors in 133 games, posting an elite .991 fielding percentage.
1992 Postseason Drama: Famously fielded the slow roller hit by Francisco Cabrera in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS, though Sid Bream narrowly slid under the tag at home plate to end Pittsburgh’s pennant hopes in tragic fashion.
Kansas City Chiefs/Royals Era: Traded to the Kansas City Royals prior to the 1993 season, Lind continued his defensive excellence in the American League through 1995 before finishing his career with the Angels.
