Tony Phillips was one of the most versatile and valuable “super-utility” players in baseball history. A switch-hitting sparkplug, he was a key component of the powerhouse Oakland Athletics of the late ’80s and later became an on-base machine for the Detroit Tigers.
Phillips didn’t just “fill in” at different positions—he played nearly all of them at a high level. Over his 18-year career, he made over 100 appearances at second base, third base, shortstop, left field, and right field. He famously played every position on the diamond except for pitcher and catcher. While he was a teammate of superstars like Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, Phillips provided the “glue” for the 1989 Oakland A’s. He is etched in A’s history for fielding the final ground ball of the 1989 World Series and throwing to Dennis Eckersley to clinch the sweep of the San Francisco Giants.
After moving to the Tigers in 1990, Phillips’ offensive production reached a new level. He developed an elite eye at the plate, becoming a walk specialist. He played until he was 40, ending his career where it started, with the Oakland A’s in 1999.
Tony Phillips passed away in 2016 at the age of 56. He remains a cult favorite in both Oakland and Detroit for his fiery personality and high-energy style of play.
