Mark Gubicza, affectionately known as “Gubie,” was a mainstay of the Kansas City Royals rotation for over a decade. He was a hard-throwing right-hander known for a heavy 93-mph fastball and a sharp slider that made him one of the most durable and effective starters of the mid-to-late 1980s.
While Bret Saberhagen often grabbed the headlines, Gubicza was the “workhorse” who provided incredible stability for Kansas City.
Gubicza was a key part of the rotation that led the Royals to their first title in the 1985 World Series. Though he didn’t pitch in the World Series (as the team used a four-man rotation), his 14 wins during the regular season were vital to getting them there.
1988 was his “Cy Young” caliber year. He went 20–8 with a 2.70 ERA and recorded 183 strikeouts over a massive 269.2 innings. He finished 3rd in the AL Cy Young voting that year. He earned All-Star nods in both 1988 and 1989, establishing himself as one of the elite pitchers in the American League.
Gubicza spent 13 of his 14 seasons in Kansas City (1984–1996) and left a permanent mark on their record books. At the time of his retirement, he was the Royals’ all-time leader in strikeouts with 1,366. He was rightfully inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 2006.
After 13 years in KC, he was traded to the Anaheim Angels in 1997 for Chili Davis. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just two starts for the Angels before he retired.
After retirement Gubicza became a long-time, high-energy color commentator for the Los Angeles Angels broadcasts.
