Orel Hershiser is a former professional baseball pitcher who is most famous for his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played in Major League Baseball for 18 seasons, from 1983 to 2000.
Hershiser played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1983–1994, 2000), Cleveland Indians (1995–1997), San Francisco Giants (1998), and New York Mets (1999).
Hershiser’s most remarkable season was in 1988, which is often considered one of the greatest pitching seasons in baseball history. During this season, he set a major league record by pitching 59 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking a record previously held by fellow Dodger Don Drysdale.
His exceptional performance continued into the postseason, where he played a pivotal role in leading the Dodgers to a World Series championship. He was named the MVP of both the National League Championship Series and the World Series. For his accomplishments, he was awarded the NL Cy Young Award and a Gold Glove Award in 1988. He was also named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
