Kirby Puckett was a beloved and highly accomplished center fielder who played his entire 12-year Major League Baseball career (1984–1995) for the Minnesota Twins. His career was marked by exceptional hitting, outstanding defense, and a role in two World Series championships.
Puckett was a cornerstone of the Twins’ two World Series titles in 1987 and 1991. His performance in the 1991 World Series, particularly in Game 6, is legendary. He made a memorable leaping catch at the center field wall and hit a game-winning home run in extra innings to force a Game 7.
Puckett was a 10-time All-Star, a six-time Gold Glove Award winner for his defensive excellence, and a six-time Silver Slugger Award winner for his offensive contributions. He also won the 1991 ALCS MVP and was the American League batting champion in 1989 with a .339 average.
Puckett’s career was tragically cut short due to a health issue. In the spring of 1996 he was diagnosed with glaucoma, and despite multiple surgeries, his vision in that eye could not be restored. This forced him to announce his retirement in July 1996.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 in his first year of eligibility. In honor of his contributions to the franchise, the Minnesota Twins retired his jersey number, 34, in 1997. Following his playing career, he worked with the Twins as an executive vice president.
