José Canseco was one of the most polarizing figures in baseball history, known for both his prodigious power and the controversies that defined his career. A two-time World Series champion and six-time All-Star, he was a key figure in the “Bash Brothers” era of the Oakland Athletics.

Canseco burst onto the scene with the Oakland Athletics, winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1986. Two years later, in 1988, he became the first player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season, a feat that earned him the AL MVP award.

Alongside teammate Mark McGwire, Canseco formed the legendary “Bash Brothers” duo. Their powerful home runs and famous forearm bash celebration made them a cultural phenomenon and a central part of the Athletics’ success in the late 1980s.

Canseco won a World Series with the Athletics in 1989 and a second one with the New York Yankees in 2000. Over his 17-year career, Canseco hit 462 home runs and had 1,407 RBIs.

Did You Know?  Canseco didn’t just hit home runs frequently; he hit them with a level of terrifying distance that routinely left broadcasters and opposing pitchers completely speechless. His raw power was best exemplified during Game 4 of the 1989 ALCS at Toronto’s SkyDome.

Facing Blue Jays left-hander Mike Flanagan, Canseco unleashed a ferocious, high-leverage swing and launched a ball deep into the Canadian night. The ball traveled a estimated 480 feet, sailing completely over the standard outfield seats and bouncing into the fifth deck of the stadium—an area that had previously been considered entirely unreachable by human hands. It remains one of the most visually stunning moonshots in postseason history, cementing his legacy as a pure titan of distance.
