Mitchell debuted with the New York Mets in 1984 and was a key contributor to their 1986 World Series championship team. Known for his versatility early on, he played six different positions as a rookie. Following his time with the Mets, he played for the San Diego Padres before being traded to the San Francisco Giants, where he reached the pinnacle of his career.
The 1989 season was Mitchell’s “pinnacle” year. He became the first Giant to win the National League MVP award since Willie McCovey in 1969. He earned both an All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award that year, leading San Francisco to its first World Series appearance since 1962.
On April 26, 1989, Mitchell made what is often cited as one of the greatest defensive plays in MLB history. During a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Ozzie Smith hit a slicing fly ball to left field. Mitchell realized he had overrun the ball and, unable to reach back with his glove, reached up and caught the ball with his bare right hand while on the run.
Mitchell was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 1992 and later enjoyed a resurgence with the Cincinnati Reds in 1993 and 1994, where he posted an impressive .326 average and 30 home runs in the strike-shortened ’94 season. He also spent time in Japan with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks (1995), where he became the highest-paid player in the country’s history at the time, famously hitting a grand slam in his first at-bat. He finished his MLB career with stints in Boston, Cleveland, and Oakland.
