Before entering professional baseball, Todd carved out a legendary amateur career at the University of Oklahoma. He became the anchor of the Sooners’ pitching staff, rewriting the school record books and leading Oklahoma to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 1972 and 1973.
His dominant collegiate performance earned him a spot on the United States National Team, where he won a Gold Medal at the 1973 Intercontinental Cup in Italy, pitching a brilliant complete-game victory against Cuba.
The New York Mets recognized his elite potential, selecting him in the second round of the 1973 MLB Draft.
Todd surged through the Mets’ minor league system, showcasing great command. He made his major league debut on April 13, 1977, joining a staff undergoing significant transitions. Operating as a spot starter and long reliever, Todd appeared in 25 games (12 starts) for the Mets, logging a 4–8 record and pitching 90.2 innings.
Just as his career was taking off, severe arm trouble struck, forcing major surgery that cost him the entire 1978 season. Undeterred, Todd fought his way back through rehabilitation. After being acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays, he made a triumphant return to the big leagues in 1979.
He enjoyed his most durable and effective professional stretch with the Blue Jays in 1980 and 1981, serving as a versatile, high-use arm out of the bullpen. In 1980, he appeared in 43 games, throwing 74.0 innings of reliable relief. He threw his final major league pitch in October 1981, retiring with a total of 115 big-league appearances.
