Lou Whitaker, nicknamed “Sweet Lou,” was a second baseman who spent his entire 19-year career with the Detroit Tigers from 1977 to 1995. He was part of the longest-running double-play combination in major league history with his teammate Alan Trammell.
As for his rookie season, Whitaker made his MLB debut in September 1977. He won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 1978 after hitting .283 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. He was the youngest player to win the award in the AL at the time, a record he held until 2012.
Whitaker’s rookie card is part of the 1978 Topps set, which features four players on one card: Garth Iorg, Dave Oliver, Sam Perlozzo, and Lou Whitaker. This card is known as the “1978 Rookie 2nd Basemen” card.
