Originally drafted by the California Angels in the 8th round of the 1971 draft, Jerry Remy the Massachusetts native made his major league debut in 1975. Playing on a squad that featured standard-setting legends like Nolan Ryan,  left-handed hitter established himself as a high-contact leadoff threat and a menace on the basepaths.

Remy burst onto the scene by playing 147 games, batting .258, scoring 82 runs, and swiping 34 bases in his rookie campaign. Over his three seasons in California, Remy averaged 36 stolen bases a year, culminating in a spectacular 1977 season where he hit 10 triples and stole a career-high 41 bases.

Following the 1977 season, the Angels traded Remy to the Boston Red Sox. It was a dream homecoming for the local kid, and he immediately made an impact during the legendary 1978 American League pennant race. In his first year with Boston, Remy batted .278, scored 87 runs, racked up 162 hits, and stole 30 bases. His steady defense and high-energy play earned him an American League All-Star selection.

Severe knee injuries ultimately cut his playing days short, forcing his retirement in 1984. He finished his 10-year playing career with 1,226 hits, 208 stolen bases, and a rock-solid .275 lifetime batting average. He was formally inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.

Though he broke out in 1975, Remy’s official Topps rookie card arrived in this 1976 set, capturing him as a young California Angel in a classic field portrait.
