Larry Alton Parrish is a former professional baseball player, coach, and manager who had a 15-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB) and also played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He was primarily a third baseman but also played right field and designated hitter.
Parrish played for the Montreal Expos (1974–1981), Texas Rangers (1982–1988), and Boston Red Sox (1988) in MLB. He concluded his playing career in Japan with the Yakult Swallows (1989) and Hanshin Tigers (1990). He was known for his power, hitting 20 or more home runs in a season five times, including two seasons with 30 or more home runs (1979 and 1987).
Parrish was a two-time All-Star, earning selections in 1979 with the Montreal Expos and in 1987 with the Texas Rangers.
After his playing career, Parrish transitioned into coaching and managing. He managed the Detroit Tigers for parts of the 1998 and 1999 seasons, compiling an 82-104 record. He also managed in the minor leagues, notably for the Toledo Mud Hens, leading them to back-to-back Governors’ Cup championships in 2005 and 2006. He was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in 2013 for his managerial career with the Mud Hens. He served as a coach for the Detroit Tigers (1997–1998) and the Atlanta Braves (2011).
