Alan Ashby is a notable figure in baseball, recognized for his long career as a catcher and his subsequent work in broadcasting.
Ashby played in Major League Baseball for 17 seasons, from 1973 to 1989. He played for the Cleveland Indians (1973–1976), Toronto Blue Jays (1977–1978), and spent the majority of his career with the Houston Astros (1979–1989). He was primarily a catcher, he was also a switch-hitter.
Ashby is particularly well-remembered for his time with the Houston Astros. He caught 901 games for the team, second only to Brad Ausmus in franchise history. Ashby was respected for his defensive abilities and his skill in handling challenging pitching staffs, including Hall of Famers like Nolan Ryan.
After his playing career, Ashby served as the Astros’ bullpen coach in 1997. He also managed in the minor leagues for the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (1994-1995) and the Kissimmee Cobras (1996).
Ashby has had an extensive broadcasting career. He served as a radio announcer for the Houston Astros from 1997 to 2005. In 2013, he returned to Houston to join the Astros’ television broadcast team, where he served as a color commentator until 2016. He was known for his analytical mind and insightful commentary, especially from the perspective of a former catcher.
