Originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 15th round of the 1973 MLB Draft, you watched Murphy break out as a full-time star in 1980. Billy Martin’s aggressive style perfectly suited your game, and Murphy became the engine of the A’s lineup right behind Rickey.
Murphy captured 6 consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1980 through 1985. His ability to go back on balls meant he virtually eliminated extra-base hits over his head in the spacious Oakland Coliseum. He put together a spectacular all-around campaign in 1980, hitting .274 with 13 home runs, 68 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases while playing elite defense.
He wrapped up his 12-year big league career in 1989 with stints for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, finishing with 166 career home runs and a brilliant 33.3 lifetime WAR.
