Willie James Wilson was a dynamic and electrifying outfielder whose 19-season Major League Baseball career (1976-1994) was defined by blazing speed, exceptional contact hitting, and highlight-reel defense.
Drafted by the Royals in the first round of the 1974 amateur draft, Wilson quickly ascended the ranks. In 1979, Wilson led the American League with 83 stolen bases, setting a Royals franchise record. In 1980, he had a career year, batting .326 with 230 hits (leading the AL) and 133 runs scored (leading the AL). He also led the league with 15 triples. He won the American League batting title in 1982 with a .332 average, a testament to his hitting consistency. He finished his career with 2,207 hits and a .285 batting average. He topped a .300 batting average five times and led the league in triples five times.
Wilson’s speed and athleticism translated to superb defense in the outfield. He covered tremendous ground in center and left field and possessed a strong arm. He earned a Gold Glove Award in 1980. Wilson was a key member of the 1985 Kansas City Royals team that won the World Series, defeating the St. Louis Cardinal. He was a 2-time All-Star (1982, 1983) and won two Silver Slugger Awards (1980, 1982), recognizing his offensive excellence.
After leaving the Royals, Wilson played two seasons with the Oakland Athletics, continuing to contribute with his speed and veteran presence. He finished his MLB career with the Chicago Cubs, playing his final game in May 1994.
After retiring, Wilson remained involved in baseball as a minor league coach. He was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 2000.
