Giles was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 17th round of the 1989 draft. He steadily climbed through a powerhouse Cleveland farm system, making his big-league debut in 1995. While he flashed clear potential—hitting .269 with 17 home runs in a semi-regular role in 1997—Cleveland’s star-studded, pennant-winning outfields of the mid-90s kept him from securing everyday playing time.
The moment he arrived in Pittsburgh, Giles exploded into a premier middle-of-the-order force. Over his nearly five seasons with the Pirates, he put up video-game numbers that ranks among the best stretches in franchise history.
- The Stat Lines: From 1999 through 2002, Giles averaged 37 home runs, 109 RBIs, and 111 walks per season.
- Elite Efficiency: He regularly posted an On-Base Percentage (OBP) well over .400 and a Slugging Percentage over .600, earning All-Star selections in 2000 and 2001.
- The 2002 Peak: His 2002 campaign was a masterclass in hitting, finishing with a .298 average, 38 home runs, 103 RBIs, and a massive 1.072 OPS (second only to Barry Bonds in the National League).
In August 2003, the Pirates traded Giles to his hometown San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal that brought Oliver Pérez and Jason Bay to Pittsburgh.
In 2005, he led the Major Leagues with 119 walks, posting a brilliant .423 OBP while hitting 15 home runs and scoring 92 runs to lead the Padres to an NL West division title.
He remained a remarkably consistent fixture in San Diego through 2009, providing veteran leadership and elite plate discipline.
