Vladimir Guerrero, nicknamed “Vlad the Impaler,” was a Dominican-American professional baseball player known for his aggressive and powerful hitting style. He played for 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1996 to 2011, primarily with the Montreal Expos and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Guerrero was famous for being a “bad-ball” hitter, capable of hitting pitches outside the strike zone with authority. He rarely struck out and was a threat to hit for power on any pitch. He won the American League MVP award in 2004 with the Angels, his first season with the team. He was a nine-time All-Star, making four with the Expos and four with the Angels and he won eight Silver Slugger Awards.
Guerrero was a dominant force with the Expos, setting franchise records for batting average, home runs, and slugging percentage. In 2002, he came close to joining the exclusive 40-40 club (40 home runs and 40 stolen bases), finishing with 39 home runs and 40 stolen bases.
He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Did You Know? While coaches spend decades teaching hitters to protect the strike zone, Guerrero treated the entire batter’s box and surrounding air as his personal hitting canvas. He famously played without batting gloves, coating his hands in pine tar and swinging with terrifying bat speed.
He routinely punished pitches that would be wild pitches for any other human being. He hit home runs off balls that literally bounced on the dirt before the plate, and pulled high-and-tight fastballs near his chin deep into the left-field bleachers. This hyper-aggressive approach didn’t result in massive strikeout numbers either; because his hand-eye coordination was so elite, he consistently put the ball in play, making him one of the hardest hitters to map out or execute a pitching strategy against.
