Vladimir Guerrero, nicknamed “Vlad the Impaler,” was a Dominican-American professional baseball player known for his aggressive and powerful hitting style. He played for 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1996 to 2011, primarily with the Montreal Expos and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Guerrero was famous for being a “bad-ball” hitter, capable of hitting pitches outside the strike zone with authority. He rarely struck out and was a threat to hit for power on any pitch.  He won the American League MVP award in 2004 with the Angels, his first season with the team. He was a nine-time All-Star, making four with the Expos and four with the Angels and he won eight Silver Slugger Awards.

Guerrero was a dominant force with the Expos, setting franchise records for batting average, home runs, and slugging percentage. In 2002, he came close to joining the exclusive 40-40 club (40 home runs and 40 stolen bases), finishing with 39 home runs and 40 stolen bases.

He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Did You Know?  While his bat generated the headline highlights, Guerrero’s defensive presence in right field was a source of pure psychological terror for opposing base runners. He possessed what was widely considered the most powerful, high-velocity throwing arm of his generation.

Guerrero didn’t just hit the cutoff man; he routinely threw out runners trying to stretch singles into doubles or testing him on deep fly balls, uncorking accurate, 300-foot laser beams from the warning track directly to third base or home plate on a fly. Runners quickly learned to hold their bases the moment a ball was hit into his quadrant, adding an invisible, elite defensive value that stabilized his teams’ pitching staffs.
