Bob Kelly “Bobby” Abreu was a professional baseball player who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for six different teams. He was known for his combination of power, speed, and patience at the plate.
Abreu played for the Houston Astros (1996-1997), Philadelphia Phillies (1998-2006), New York Yankees (2006-2008), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2009-2012), Los Angeles Dodgers (2012), and New York Mets (2014).
He was a two-time MLB All-Star (2004, 2005), won a Gold Glove Award (2005) for his work in the outfield, and a Silver Slugger Award (2004). He also won the Home Run Derby in 2005, setting a then-record of 41 total home runs. He had two seasons where he hit at least 30 home runs and stole at least 30 bases, making him a member of the 30-30 club.
Abreu has been inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame.
