Rafael Palmeiro was a Cuban-American professional baseball player who had a long and productive career in Major League Baseball (MLB). Known for his consistent hitting and power, he is one of only a handful of players in MLB history to be a member of both the 3,000-hit club and the 500-home run club.
Over his 20-season career (1986-2005), Palmeiro played for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles. He was a four-time All-Star, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner.
While Palmeiro’s career was marked by immense statistical success, it was also surrounded by controversy. In 2005, shortly after recording his 3,000th hit, he was suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. This event, and his prior testimony before Congress where he denied using steroids, significantly tarnished his legacy.

Did You Know? What truly separated Palmeiro from many of the flashier sluggers of his generation was his remarkable endurance. He was a lock to take the field for 155-plus games every single summer, transitioning from Texas to the Baltimore Orioles and back again without ever succumbing to extended power slumps.
Over a brilliant 20-year journey, Palmeiro quietly compiled ten separate 30-home run seasons and nine 100-RBI campaigns. This steady accumulation culminated in a historic milestone on July 15, 2005, when he collected a clean double off Toronto’s Ervin Santana. With that hit, Palmeiro became just the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to enter the mythic, dual sanctuary of 3,000 career hits and 500 career home runs, joining legends Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Eddie Murray.
