Willie Howard Mays (1931-2024), widely known as “The Say Hey Kid,” was an American professional baseball player whose unparalleled combination of power, speed, defense, and hitting prowess made him arguably the most complete player in the history of the sport. His career spanned 23 seasons, primarily with the New York and San Francisco Giants (1951-1972), with a final stint with the New York Mets (1972-1973).

Mays began his professional career in the Negro American League with the Birmingham Black Barons at just 17 years old. His incredible talent quickly drew attention, and he was signed by the New York Giants in 1950. He made his MLB debut in 1951, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award despite a slow start.

Mays was a prodigious home run hitter, finishing his career with 660 home runs. Possessing incredible speed, Mays was a threat on the basepaths, stealing 338 bases in his career and leading the NL in stolen bases four times. He was the first National League player to join the 30-30 club (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season). Mays finished with a career batting average of .302 and collected 3,283 hits, placing him among the exclusive 3,000-hit club. He posted 10 seasons with a .300 batting average and 100 RBIs. Mays redefined center field play with his athleticism, grace, and powerful arm. He won 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards (1957-1968).

Mays was overwhelmingly elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979 on his first ballot. In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Willie Mays was more than just a baseball player; he was a cultural icon. His infectious enthusiasm, dazzling play, and humble demeanor captivated fans across generations. He remained a beloved figure in the baseball community and was a champion for civil rights off the field. His passing in June 2024 marked the end of an era, but his legacy as the “Say Hey Kid” and one of baseball’s absolute greatest will endure forever.
