Jacob Nelson “Nellie” Fox (1927-1975) was an American professional baseball player, primarily known for his exceptional career as a second baseman for the Chicago White Sox. He was a cornerstone of the “Go-Go White Sox” of the 1950s.
Fox began his professional career with the Philadelphia Athletics, making his Major League debut in 1947. However, it was after being traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1949 that his career truly blossomed. Fox played 14 seasons with the White Sox (1950-1963), becoming a fan favorite for his energetic play and consistent performance. His number 2 was retired by the White Sox. His best season came in 1959, when he led the White Sox to the American League pennant, their first since 1919. He hit .306 and captured the AL MVP award. Though the White Sox lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Fox batted an impressive .375 in the series.
Fox was renowned for his fielding at second base. He won three Gold Glove Awards (1957, 1959, 1960). He also was a perennial All-Star, earning selections to 12 American League All-Star teams.
After his playing career, which concluded with the Houston Astros in 1965, Fox served as a coach for the Astros and later the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997 by the Veterans Committee.
