Vernon Sanders “Vern” Law (born 1930) was a durable and respected right-handed pitcher who spent nearly his entire 16-season Major League career (1950–1951, 1954–1967) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is most famous for his career-defining 1960 Cy Young Award season that spearheaded the Pirates to a World Series victory.

He earned the nickname “Deacon” or “Preacher” due to his strong religious faith as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

His career was interrupted for two seasons (1952–1953) while he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Law was primarily a control pitcher, often finishing among the top National League pitchers in the fewest walks allowed per nine innings. Law had the finest season of his career, posting a 20–9 Win-Loss record with a 3.08 Earned Run Average (ERA). Notably, this was the era when only one Cy Young Award was given across both leagues, making him the sole recipient that year.

Law was the ace of the Pirates staff that defeated the New York Yankees in the historic 1960 World Series (the series famously ended on Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run). Law won two games in the series (Games 1 and 4) and started the decisive Game 7. He was a two-time All-Star in 1960 (as two games were played that year), even starting and winning the first All-Star Game.

After suffering a serious ankle injury in 1961 that hampered his performance for several years, Law staged a remarkable comeback in 1965 at age 35, posting a stellar 17–9 record with a career-best 2.15 ERA. He won the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award and was named the Associated Press’s National League Comeback Player of the Year.
