Edward Charles “Whitey” Ford (1928-2020), known as “The Chairman of the Board” for his cool demeanor and masterful control on the mound, was a legendary left-handed pitcher who spent his entire 16-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career (1950, 1953-1967) with the New York Yankees.
He quickly rose through the minor league system, making his MLB debut in 1950 with an impressive 9-1 record as a rookie. His promising start was interrupted by a two-year stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He boasts an incredible career winning percentage of .690 (236 wins, 106 losses), which is among the highest in baseball history for pitchers with a significant number of wins. Ford’s clutch performances in the postseason are a major part of his legacy. He holds numerous World Series records. He was a six-time World Series champion with the Yankees (1950, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962).
In 1961, Ford had a phenomenal season, leading the American League with 25 wins (against only 4 losses) and a 2.72 ERA, earning him the Cy Young Award. He also won the World Series MVP award that year. Ford was also a 10-time All-Star.
Ford was known more for his intelligence, control, and ability to outthink hitters than for overpowering velocity. He relied on a masterful curveball, a deceptive fastball, and a slider, often varying speeds and arm angles. Ford’s career was shortened somewhat by arm injuries in his later years, leading to his retirement in 1967. After his playing days, he briefly served as a Yankees coach and was part of their broadcast team.
Whitey Ford was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974 alongside his longtime teammate Mickey Mantle. His number 16 was retired by the New York Yankees, and he is honored with a plaque in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.
