Salvatore Anthony “Sal” Maglie (1917–1992) was one of the most feared and intimidating right-handed pitchers of the 1950s. Known for his intense glare, five o’clock shadow, and tendency to pitch aggressively inside, he earned the memorable nickname “The Barber” because he gave opposing batters “close shaves.”
His career is notable not only for his late-blooming dominance but also for the unusual path he took, which included playing for all three New York teams of that era. He played for the New York Giants (1945, 1950–1955), Cleveland Indians (1955–1956), Brooklyn Dodgers (1956–1957), New York Yankees (1957–1958) and St. Louis Cardinals (1958).
Maglie is one of only a handful of players to play for the New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Yankees while all three teams were based in New York City. He was an All-Star twice (1951, 1952) and was a key part of the Giants’ rotation that swept the Cleveland Indians.
